Keynote Speaker

Steven Levitt-Apr28.jpg

Steven D. LevittBest-selling Author of Freakonomics

When mild-mannered economist Steven D. Levitt published a paper linking a rise in abortion to a drop in crime, it set off a firestorm of controversy and had both the conservatives and liberals up in arms. But Levitt has no political agenda and is the last person to be called a moralist. He is a brilliant but uncomplicated man who uses simple questions to reach startling conclusions. The Wall Street Journal has said “If Indiana Jones were an economist, he'd be Steven Levitt,” he has shown other economists just how well their tools can make sense of the real world.

Steven Levitt is a tenured professor in the University of Chicago's economics department (he received tenure after only two years) and is the recipient of the American Economic Association’s prestigious John Bates Clark Medal, given to the country's best economist under 40.

Originally published in the U.S. in 2005, Freakonomics instantly became a cultural phenomenon. Hailed by critics and readers alike, it went on to spend more than eight years on The New York Times bestseller list, having sold more than 5 million copies around the world, in more than 35 languages. Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Levitt shows how economics is, at root, the study of incentives— that is, how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. Freakonomics shows that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and—if the right questions are asked—is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking.

Best Practices for Data-driven Success Panel
Moderator: Michelle Blackmer, Senior Director Customer Advocacy, Informatica
Panelists: Terri Mikol,Director, Data Governance Office, UPMC
BJ Fesq, Chief Architect and Chief Data Officer, CIT Group
Larry Keyser, Solution Architect/Technical Lead, United Technologies
Vimal Vel, VP of Partner Strategy, Dun & Bradstreet

The world is increasingly being run on data. Whether driven by regulatory compliance or a desire to analyze what leads to more engaged consumers, or both, success depends on the ability to deliver clean, safe and connected data to the right stakeholders. Having great data like this available where and when it is needed doesn’t happen by accident; people, process and technology have to work together seamlessly. Most importantly, successful data-ready enterprises demand an interlock between business and IT. This panel will include Informatica clients and a partner who gained consensus and collaborated with business and technical colleagues to define and advance data-related best practices across their organizations. Emphasis will be on exposing practical, efficient and reusable approaches.

Business & Management Lessons from Freakonomics & SuperFreakonomics
Steven D. Levitt, Best-selling Author of Freakonomics

In this engaging presentation, Steven Levitt addresses the fact that the old rules of business just don’t apply and therefore the ideas he and co-author Stephen Dubner have presented in Freakonomicsand SuperFreakonomics make even more sense now than they did a few years ago. It’s a new world, and that demands a new way of thinking. He offers audiences a way of getting beneath the surface of modern business practices. Using humor and first-rate storytelling he discusses the sort of topics that are on every business person’s mind these days: the ways to create behavior change, the incentives that work and don’t work, and the value of asking unpopular questions. The difference between the Freakonomics presentation and other "economic" presentations is that while most economics presentations present great tools for coming up with answers, they don’t come up with the interesting questions. This presentation offers both.

Accelerating Analytics with Data Governance
Terri Mikol,Director, Data Governance Office, UPMC

Analytics aim to deliver actionable and differentiated insights. However, it can be hard to trust analytics if your data lacks consistent definition and access. These types of bottlenecks can inhibit decisions that differentiate you, increase profitability and, in the case of UPMC, improve patient outcomes. Accelerating meaningful analytics demands data governance and this requires a cross-functional data management effort; data governance is everyone’s job. Join this session to learn how UPMC is delivering a world-class data governance program in support of enterprise analytics.

Hyper Client Centricity – Advanced Entity Resolution to Enable “Segment of One”
Dennis Rossi, Master Data Management Competency Lead, Knowledgent
Nick Kramer, Solution Partner, Knowledgent

Maturing Big Data technical and operational capabilities are changing the way organizations are thinking about client centricity. Hear about emerging trends in Data Management, Big Data Analytics and Data Governance that are driving the shift to the Segment of One. Just as Data Management has evolved over the years, so have the value propositions and business drivers behind its practical applications. As professionals working with or researching the latest tools and techniques, we've all undoubtedly been exposed to themes such as "Customer Centricity", "Know Your Customer", "Customer 360", etc. Learn about how practical applications of these concepts are affecting the way organizations across various industries are interacting with their clients. Find out how, and to what degree, various industries are embracing Segment of One and learn how technology is evolving to enable business users with timely access to quality data to deliver the right message consistently across channels, and at just the right time, to drive new levels of customer acquisition, engagement and loyalty.
